Woodstock Concert 1969..Some Facts

Woodstock was a music concert that is regarded as one of the biggest events in music history. The woodstock concert was held on a 600 acre farm in the town of Bethel in New York. Bethel is 43 miles south-west of the town of Woodstock....so i still don't know why they called it Woodstock!!

The woodstock concert was held between the 15th and 18th of August 1969. The Woodstock Festival was put together by four business partners, who were: Michael Lang, John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, and Artie Kornfeld.

These four guys got together and each put their own views forward as to what their individual sights of Woodstock would be. As the groups views started to differ, Roberts (who was one of the biggest financiers of the event) was undecided in whether or not to keep pumping the money in, or to completely pull out of the whole project. Luckily he decided to push forward with the project and they went on to create one of the biggest events in the history of rock music!

Prior to the concert, sales had amounted to approximately 186,000 tickets at a cost of around $20 per ticket (converts to approx $70 each today) but on the first day of the concert a radical group, called the UAWMF (up against the wall mother*******) cut the fences and allowed everyone in to the concert for free. Word about this spread like wildfire and people started turning up to the concert in the thousands, this caused traffic jams that were 20 miles long!

Over the 4 days of the Woodstock concert, some of the biggest names in music at the time performed and approximately half a million people attended. This amount of people caused lots of dramas, as the concert was only intended to house around 200,000 people, and things like food shortages, limited sanitation facilities, lack of places to sleep and camp, combined with lots of rain and mud, made the weekend very testing for some! but all in all, from all reports, most people had the music weekend of their lives.

its called woodstock because it had been the original place michael lang had envisioned to create a recording studio for artist to come and enjoy the peaceful environment away from the city.

I live in NY and just visited the town of woodstock. Speaking to a few locals, I learned the reason why it was called woodstock festival even though it was held in Bethel. The founders/organizers were from woodstock, the original plan was to have it there in a field where they held many outdoor concerts. But, they couldn't get permits for some reason. They tried in a nearby town, but to no avail. a few weeks before the concert, a farmer in bethel offered his land. they accepted. but, kept the name "woodstock festival" because that's where it originated. and a few of the musicians were regular recording artists in woodstock before the festival.

This information was given to me by women who worked (possibly owned) a store called woodstock blues in the town of woodstock.

hope this info helps.

This is a very short hub for such a huge event. Couldn't you have given us a little more?!... As for your poll, Janis Joplin was terrible at Woodstock and Hendrix wasn't at his best either. Later!
